The Institute for Business Informatics – Data ? Knowledge Engineering will present the following research projects at the 2026 Long Night of Research:

Station 1: Flying Safely: Can AI Improve Aviation?

Air traffic is growing steadily, pushing the air traffic network and the people involved to their limits. Artificial intelligence helps make flying safer and more efficient. At this station, you’ll learn how this works. We present findings from current and completed research projects in the field of air traffic management. We demonstrate how information technology and artificial intelligence contribute to making air traffic safer and more efficient. In particular, we explain how knowledge representation and logical reasoning, as well as machine learning, facilitate the distribution of relevant information to pilots, air traffic controllers, and others. We also explain how departure sequences can be optimized through the use of genetic algorithms and how flight weather reports can be generated using language models and ontologies.
